Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard (Japanese: 世界樹の迷宮II 諸王の聖杯 Labyrinth of the World Tree II: Holy Grail of the Kings) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo DS, released in Japan in February 2008, and in North America in June 2008.
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight is a remake of this game released for the Nintendo 3DS. Etrian Odyssey II HD is a remastered version of this game released for the Nintendo Switch and Steam gaming platforms.
Story
The game is set at High Lagaard, host to a giant Yggdrasil said to be the gateway to a legendary floating castle. Upon discovery of a giant labyrinth within, the Duke of High Lagaard has invited adventurers to explore the labyrinth and find the truth behind the castle. While many have taken on this grand quest, just as many have failed. You are one of the latest groups of explorers who has come to take on the challenge.
Gameplay
In common with the previous game in the series, in Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard, you can create a team with up to five characters to use as you progress through the game. The main gameplay consists of fighting monsters and mapping out each area as you progress with optional quests and items that you can find.
Gameplay Changes
- Upon starting a new game you have a prompt to enter a password from Etrian Odyssey, which that game will generate if the player has completed the main plot there. The password allows the player to reuse the name of their old guild, on top of unlocking a few exclusive accessories for use immediately. Some NPC dialogue and labyrinth events will change if a password is being used.
- This feature is retained in the HD version, but instead of inputting a password, the game will check if you have an Etrian Odyssey HD save file for the same purposes. Both games must be on the same platform.
- The level cap can be raised from the base of 70 by retiring the character at their level cap. The replacement not only gains retirement bonuses but also has their level cap raised by 1. This change only applies to the individual character and is preserved across multiple retirements.
- The Gear Registry is exclusive to this game, filled out as the party unlocks equipment that can be made at the shop.
- Greatly improved mapping tools - you now have 21 icons instead of 10 from before, and can paint floor tiles in three colors.
- Skill trees include a set of skills available to every class, but may be prerequisites to some class-exclusive skills.
- In this game you travel upwards through the Yggdrasil Tree rather than below it.
Persistent Changes
- Each party member's stats cap at 99.
- You can now register up to 30 members in your guild, up from 16 in the previous game.
- Resting a party member now only reduces their level by 5, instead of 10 in the previous game.
- Retiring now grants a bonus to all stats for the apprentice, regardless of which class the retiring member was.
- You can now store items at the Inn to free up inventory space.
- Medicines are bought from the shop rather than from the hospital.
- You can now sidestep within the labyrinth with the L and R buttons.
- The difference in levels between your party and the enemy they fight no longer has a major impact on damage dealt and received.
- You can now rearrange your party's formation mid-battle using the "Switch" option.
- Farming resources from gather points now poses a risk of an enemy ambush.
- Quest-related and plot-relevant items are now allocated into a separate "Key Items" inventory that does not count towards your inventory limit.
Etrian Odyssey II HD Changes
- Revised algorithm to bind infliction to improve bind infliction rates
- Review enemy analysis data in the middle of battle with the R button
- Quest reward weapons can now be sold for 99,999en.
- The Monstrous Codex data now displays the enemy's damage and ailment/bind vulnerabilities
- Each class now has an additional portrait image
- If a player sidesteps into an FOE, their orientation will be corrected to the direction they moved. This allows for a possible escape if their back is not against a wall.
- If an FOE barges into battle, the player's orientation will change to face the direction the FOE came from. If this rotates them such that their back is against a wall, this will disable escape.
- A New Game Plus feature is introduced, and you can toggle what gets carried over:
- Guild members, money, inventory, shop stock, Item Compendium and Monstrous Codex, and maps can all be toggled.
- All quests and chests are reset.
- Duplicate key items will not be collected.
- You get to rename your guild on New Game Plus.
- Your decision on whether to carry data from an Etrian Odyssey HD save cannot be adjusted during a New Game Plus.
Skill changes
- The Landsknecht's Unbind and the Dark Hunter's Unbind skills have been revised to 3-point skills
- The Medic's Unbind and the Survivalist's Foesense skills have been revised to 5-point skills
- The Survivalist's 1st Turn and Slowstep skills have been revised to 1-point skills with a 100% success rate
- The defense buff from the Troubadour's Crusade skill now works as intended.
- The Alchemist's physical spells can now qualify for conditional drops.
Force Skills
- Main article: Force Skills
This game introduces the gauge-based super move mechanic that other titles will refine. Each class comes with a unique Force Skill that is only available once their Force Gauge is full. Effects range from powerful attacks that can clear out enemy groups, shields that nullify damage, or buffs that grant a surge of power to the party.

Classes
- Main article: Category:Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard Classes
Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard features a total of 12 playable classes. Nine return from the first game, while three - the Gunner, War Magus, and Beast - make their first appearances.
- Landsknecht
- These powerhouses are capable of using either a Sword or Axe, the former favoring speed and the latter favoring power. They make for great front-line attackers that can dish out damage and take hits, but their low TP restricts the frequency where they can use their skills. Their signature elemental Chaser skills have been improved to work with both swords and axes.
- Survivalist
- Swift archers that support their teammates with bow and arrow from the back row. Survivalists are also experts at gathering materials from the labyrinth and supporting navigation by spotting threats or nullifying damage tiles. While their damage output is not as strong as before, they can use special arrows to inflict ailments to disable enemies.
- Protector
- Heavily armored warriors specialized in defending their allies with their shields. Protectors have some of the highest HP and VIT among the party to let them take a lot of hits, and they can deploy skills that can nullify specific enemy attacks.
- Dark Hunter
- Masters of deception, able to immobilize an enemy using their skills with the whip or to deliver powerful blows to destroy an enemy's nerves using a sword. Their meager defenses and relatively high TP costs may be a hassle in the early stages, but they are formidable despite this.
- Medic
- The healing specialists have all manners of restoring HP, removing ailments and binds, and reviving fallen party members, though this is offset by their low turn speed and mediocre direct combat ability.
- Alchemist
- Accomplished mages that can exploit an enemy's elemental weakness to the fullest, using their massive TP stores to sling elemental damage to enemies. While they no longer can inflict poison like before, they have the ability to strike enemy physical weaknesses.
- Troubadour
- Bolstering the team with song and dance, these performers excel in granting modifying effects to both ally and enemy alike, even going so far as to augment enemy stats and ally attack elements. Their ability to enhance their allies is offset by their mediocre direct combat ability, even under the effects of their own skills.
- Ronin
- The Ronin in Lagaard are one of the strongest front-line attackers, wielding powerful katanas with similarly high Strength, but have poor survivability as they have low HP and cannot access heavy armor. Unlike Etrian Ronin, their Stances are now passive skills that are constantly active, and no longer need to spend time setting up.
- Hexer
- The strength of a Hexer lies in their varied arsenal of curses to debilitate, weaken, control, and outright kill their enemies making them some of the best at turning the tide of battle without even having to raise a weapon.
- Gunner
- Back-line fighters that fire powerful but inaccurate shots. Through proper targeting they can deliver attacks that bind enemy body parts, or with special ammunition they can deliver elemental shots.
- War Magus
- A generalist class that can wield sword or staff, and brings medium-strength healing and single-target buffs to complement their sword skills. Their sword skills are dependent on their targets suffering from specific ailments, and typically require the cooperation of a Hexer to function at their fullest.
- Beast
- Loyal beasts that are unlocked at the end of the Ancient Forest. Beasts are focused on defending the party by taking hits in their place, and they enjoy strong specialized armor to compensate for their inability to wear what their human allies can. While they have high HP to maximize the number of hits they can survive, they can sometimes take hits when they don't need to, and would need a healer on hand to keep them in shape.
