Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan (Japanese: 世界樹の迷宮IV 伝承の巨神 Labyrinth of the World Tree IV: Great God of Legend) is a dungeon-crawler RPG for the Nintendo 3DS, released in Japan in July 2012, and internationally in 2013. It is the first of five games and four spinoffs in the series released for the Nintendo 3DS.
Story
The player starts as an adventurer in Tharsis, the city closest to the legendary tree, Yggdrasil. On the request of the Count, you obtain a Skyship and explore several labyrinths on the way to reaching Yggdrasil. Along the way, however, you encounter three other factions, a forest-dwelling race named Vessels and their Medium, an animal person race named Sentinels, and the humans that stayed by Yggdrasil, dubbed the Empire.
As you progress through strata, you learn more about the history of these factions and Yggdrasil – that Vessels and Sentinels were created by humans in the distant past, along with the holy tree, with the intent of bringing fertility back to dead lands, and that this infertility is encroaching again, leading to the Empire seeking out a means of reactivating the tree and sending Logre to Tharsis – and have to stop the Empire and its leader, Baldur. The tree, however, is reactivated, and assumes the form of the namesake titan, for you to stop.
After the game concludes, a new stratum is opened up, allowing players to explore a closed-off quarantine that sheds further light on the history of Yggdrasil, the people who created it, and the environment they found themselves in.
Gameplay
In common with previous games in the series, in Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, you can create a team with up to five characters to use as you progress through the game. The main gameplay consists of fighting monsters and mapping out each area as you progress with optional quests and items that you can find.
As the first game of the series on the 3DS, all monsters are now animated 3D models with designs comparable to the released artwork with FOEs and bosses presented as 3D models in the overworld in this game. The music in this game is also fully orchestrated and no longer uses FM synthesis.
Guild information can now be shared through the 3DS Streetpass function or by scanning QR codes.
Gameplay Changes
- Overworld exploration is tied closely with dungeon navigation. Instead of one large labyrinth with multiple strata, the main gameplay loop takes place across different three-floor dungeons distributed across the vast overworld. The player can also find resources from the surrounding lands or engage with overworld FOEs.
- Also in the overworld are one-floor side dungeons that can be explored for additional resources, enemies, and treasures.
- The stat increase from Books now has a cap of +10 per stat per character. This stat bonus transfers when Retiring the character.
Persistent Changes
- Each character can only equip a maximum of one accessory at a time.
- Resting at the Explorers Guild now reduces the party member's level by 2 instead of 5.
- No fee is incurred for storage or renaming.
- You now have 40 different map icons to use on your maps, and can choose between four colors for floor tiles.
- The party's formation can be rearranged freely within battle.
- Enemy formations now can take front and back rows, following similar principles to the player's party.
- Enemies in the back row take less damage from melee attacks, but in turn deal reduced melee damage. Defeating every enemy in the front row brings their back row forward.
- Melee attacks also cannot reach from one side's back row to the other. Only ranged attacks can do so, without any damage penalty.
- The player can now access attacks of their own that pierce through enemy rows.
- You can also occasionally encounter rare breeds of enemies, which are shiny versions that have a higher action speed, reward higher EXP if slain, but are prone to running.
- Rare breed FOEs also exist, will not run, but will grow stronger for each passing turn.
- Review enemy analysis data in the middle of battle with the R button
- The Monstrous Codex data now displays the enemy's damage vulnerabilities
Forging
- Main article: Forging
The same forging system returns from Etrian Odyssey III, only that forging no longer has any ental cost.
Burst Skills
- Main article: Burst Skills
This game's iteration of the gauge-based super move mechanic is Burst Skills. Actions taken in battle can fill the Burst Gauge, which can fully fill up to five times. Burst Skills set by the party can be initiated by any party member, expending stored charges of the Gauge. Burst skills can range between powerful attacks, temporary strong buffs, or shields that nullify damage.
Subclassing
- Main article: Subclasses
Available halfway into the Golden Lair, subclassing allows a party member to use the skill set of a different class to enhance their performance in battle.
The skills from the chosen subclass are now capped at half the usual maximum, and Class-exclusive passives or Sky skills cannot be learned. Also, upon setting a subclass, the party member gains the ability to wield two weapons, and the ability to wield the weapon (or shield) associated to their subclass without needing to invest in any mastery passives. The second weapon will only be accounted for when using a skill that requires them, or with a few select skills that allow the user to attack with both weapons.

Classes and characters
- Main article: Category:Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan Classes
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan features a total of 10 playable classes. Most classes are similar to those of the first two games in function, with two, the Landsknecht and Medic, being borrowed directly (albeit with different portraits and slightly altered skillsets). Three classes, the Arcanist, Bushi, and Imperial, are unavailable at first and must be unlocked by progressing through the story.
- Landsknecht
- Proficient with swords or rapiers, the Landsknechts of Tharsis lead the charge by striking first, empowering the rest of the team that moves after them. Their signature Link skills start with an elementally-charged attack and follows up on their allies' attacks with more hits.
- Nightseeker
- Assassins that are fast but fragile. Nightseekers first aim to disable the enemy by inflicting ailments with special throwing knives, before moving in for the kill with increased damage to ailing targets. Nightseekers also gain the privilege of dual-wielding early, and striking with both weapons they wield at once.
- Fortress
- Heavily-armored warriors that serve as the defensive anchor of the party. Fortresses put a greater emphasis on taking hits in place of their allies, with skills that force enemies to attack them and a class passive that grants them benefits when they get attacked.
- Sniper
- Long-range combatants that can deliver critical hits and disable enemy body parts with well-aimed arrows. Snipers have the unique ability to deal critical hits with their attack skills as well as their normal attack to weave both specialties into their combat role.
- Medic
- Healing specialists who have a full suite of recovery, revival, and ailment/bind cure. If they need to go on the offensive, they can use staves or maces to clobber the opposition into submission.
- Runemaster
- Masters of the elements that deal damage with powerful spells. Their basic elemental Runes also influence the elemental resistances of both sides, potentially creating new weaknesses to exploit.
- Dancer
- The nimble Dancers affect the allies in their line with dances that can heal, buff, or trigger additional attacks, and can use the revamped formation-swapping mechanics to shift forward or backward on the fly depending on who they need to support.
- Arcanist
- A class unlocked through alliance with the Vessels, Arcanists are physically frail but are specialized in disabling entire groups of enemies with their magic circles. The circles attempt further ailment/bind inflictions at the end of each turn until they expire.
- Bushi
- A class unlocked through alliance with the Sentinels, the Bushi are front-line dual-wielding berserkers that can enter a frenzy that improves their damage output at the cost of losing health every turn. Between katana slashes and mace strikes, there are few enemies that fully resist their offensive suite.
- Imperial
- A class unlocked through cooperation with the Empire, the Imperials wield massive drive blades that prevent them from carrying a secondary weapon, but in turn have the ability to deliver massive spikes of damage. Their drive blades overheat in the process, forcing a cooldown period before their drives can be used again.
Characters
- Guildmaster - The manager of the Explorers Guild not only handles your guild members but also helps unlock new Burst Skills to use.
- Dalla - She runs the Saehrimnir Inn, and is a fantastic chef.
- Wynne - The town blacksmith with a thick accent who can work a forge despite her small stature.
- Kirtida - The barkeeper at the Dancing Peacock, who manages the quests you're issued.
- Outland Count - The ruler of Tharsis who has commissioned exploration of the lands north of the country to investigate the Yggdrasil.
- Kirjonen - A member of the Holy Rune Knights that serves a neighboring nation, who explores the outlands of Tharsis in his liege's name.
- Wiglaf - A swordsman who has come to Tharsis in search of adventure and a way to prove herself.
- The Medium - A human girl who lives with the Vessels and is idolized for her link to the Yggdrasil.
- Wufan - The representative of the Vessels. She harbors distrust for humanity as she believed they abandoned the Vessels when the Titan first appeared.
- Kibagami - The representative of the Sentinels, who views humanity as an ally in his opposition of the Titan.
- Whirlwind - A member of the Empire who assists your party in your journey while fulfilling his ulterior motives of aiding the Prince.
- Prince Baldur - The leader of the Empire north of Tharsis, who seeks to use the Yggdrasil to rejuvenate the desolate lands of his nation at all costs.
