Overview
Long before the events of the game's events, the world was struck by a massive disaster, leaving the land desolate and inhospitable. In response to this calamity, the scientists of the world developed the Yggdrasil Project, planting massive trees with the aim of absorbing the pollution to purify the land. To this end, they also developed the Vessels, Sentinels and Hollows as Servitor races that can survive in the harsh environment to aid in the Yggdrasil's development.
The Yggdrasil Project was successful, but wasn't perfect; the pollution it had absorbed ran the risk of driving the tree berserk, unleashing another wave of pollution back onto the planet and giving rise to a disease that affects the Servitor races that dooms them to a painful death. The berserk tree turned into the Heavenbringer, the Titan of legend, and as the Imperials fled from the Titan, various pockets of humanity banded with the Servitor races to defeat it, separating it into the Heart, Soul, and Crown.
While the dormant Yggdrasil did successfully bring life back to the lands around Tharsis, the Imperials' territory remained barren. In a desperate attempt to rejuvenate his nation, Prince Baldur sought to re-activate the Yggdrasil, despite the lives it would cost him. The guild thwarts his plans and defeats the Heavenbringer at the end of the game, rescuing The Medium and saving the inhabitants of Tharsis.
